The Advisory Board proposes to a uniform MIKAS Informative plate to be installed at a spring site. It is common that such installation requires a permission from responsible national or local authority (or owner), including possible adaptation to their needs. However, a few things, such emblems of the IAH and the Karst Commission, as well as a short information About the project and About karst are highly recommended.
The plate would preferably be in two languages, national and English; however, multilingual environments may require an adaptation to local conditions. The sketches and/or simple cross-sections would help visitors better understand the hydrogeologic setting and spring origin. Although photographs are not necessary, they may be useful in explaining other important features in the spring’s catchment area.
The platform for installing the plate outdoors could be made of different materials (wood, metal, bricks) or plate could be directly fixed to a suitable rock surface in the proximity of the spring. The plate could also be placed indoor in nearby premises such as a visitor centre, resort, or similar.
The first MIKAS informative plate will be installed on September 13, 2026, at Unica Spring, Slovenia in celebration of the first anniversary of the International Day of Cave and Karst established by UNESCO in 2025.
